Basin and sink resealing

Basin resealing cuts out the old silicone and tools a sanitary bead where a bathroom basin or vanity meets the worktop, pedestal or wall. It is for UK homes where splash water is staining the cabinet. A kitchen sink is not booked. Send the quote form or WhatsApp with the basin type and the postcode.

Who it is for

It is for bathroom basins and vanity sinks. A kitchen sink is a different trade and is not booked through this page.

01

Inset basins

The bead runs around the bowl where it meets the worktop. A swollen chipboard edge is noted before any silicone goes on.

02

Wall-hung and pedestal

The joint is where the basin meets the tiled wall, and sometimes a short line at the pedestal.

03

Countertop bowls

These need a neat joint under the rim. A thick smeared bead is avoided because it traps water.

When people book

Black silicone around the bowl, a musty vanity, or a gap you can see at the worktop are the usual triggers.

Before the visit

Clear the worktop. Do not run the tap onto the joint just before the visit.

After the bead is tooled

Leave the basin unused for the cure time given on the day, usually the rest of the day and overnight. Wipe the joint after washing.

Questions on this job

Is sanitary silicone different from the tube in a hardware shop?

Wet joints need a mould-resistant sanitary silicone. A general decorators’ sealant looks similar in the tube and then peels in a wet gap.

Will a new bead fix a swollen vanity?

No. Silicone stops more water getting in. Chipboard that has already swollen stays swollen. That is said before any bead is tooled.

Can I silicone the basin myself the night before?

Please do not. A fresh DIY bead has to be cut out again, and it adds time to the quote. Leave the old joint as it is and keep the tap off it.

How long should a basin joint last?

A thin sanitary bead on a dry, sound edge usually lasts for years if it is wiped after use. It fails early when water sits in a thick smeared joint or the bowl moves because the bracket is loose.
